In this blog entry, we'll explore the Manzo family's culinary world in Sicily, discovering dishes that sustain them and reflect Sicilian life, from a chapter of "Hungry Planet: What the World Eats" by Peter Menzel and Faith D'Aluisio. Visuals used are from the presentation slides I have made to introduce the chapter to my fellow classmates.
When we first hear, "Italian food", we think of pastas, pizzas, and lasagnas.
However, I was surprised when saw what kinds of foods came up when I searched for images for "Sicilian food". It looked so different from the images of Italian food that I had. It seemed like Sicilian food uses more fish than I imagined.
"Hungry Planet" includes pictures of families with that they consume in a week.
It looks like the Manzo family consumes a lot of fruits and vegetables, as well as what seems to be like some kind of animal flesh, and a lot of bread and pasta.
The book also includes how much money the family uses in a month. The most money is used on cigarettes, and the least is on beverages.
